STARI Professional Learning Series

This professional learning series consists of 18 sessions and is intended to be completed over the course of a year. In these sessions, you’ll hear from curriculum designers, subject matter experts, and STARI coaches. Each session includes information to read and digest, videos to watch, and activities to complete. Our suggested pacing guide is below.

Alternative Pacing Considerations

If you do not cover the first five sessions before the first day of school, plan accordingly to provide teachers with the content before they need to teach it:

As soon as possible, since discussion is fundamental to STARI	Session 2: Discussion Before teachers reach Lesson 4	Session 3: Decoding Before teachers reach Lesson 6	Session 5: Comprehension Strategies Before teachers reach Lesson 9	Session 8: Partner Reading Before teachers reach Lesson 15	"Session 9: Guided Reading Session 10: Talk Goals 1 and 2" Before teachers reach Lesson 26 (3.1 only; Lesson 39 in 1.1 and 2.1)	"Session 11: Debate Session 12: Talk Goals 3 and 4" Before teachers begin Unit 2	Session 13: Getting Ready for Unit 2 If necessary, this session may be postponed until Year 2 of STARI implementation	Session 14: Going Deeper with Discussion If necessary, this session may be postponed until Year 2 of STARI implementation	Session 15: Adaptations Before teachers begin Unit 3	Session 16: Getting Ready for Unit 3 (Note: We encourage teachers to complete three units in a year if possible. Our data show more student growth in classrooms where three units are completed. However, many teachers do not complete all 3 units in their first year of STARI implementation.) This should be completed as the final PLC meeting of the school year	Session 17: Debrief, Reflection, Planning for Next Year
